Are you looking for volunteer opportunities to support a youth organization such as the 172 Air Cadet Squadron? Consider joining the Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) as a member or parent volunteer.

What is the Squadron Sponsoring Committee?

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) consists of representatives of the Air Cadet League of Canada – Ontario Provincial Committee (OPC). The SSC consists of community volunteers who work in consultation with the squadron’s staff to manage and control the Squadron’s budget, finances, and fundraising activities. SSC members meet monthly to ensure the squadron’s financial budget needs are met, fundraising and event planning coordination, and to support cadet activities.

The SSC is often described as the “backbone of the Air Cadet Movement” because one of the secrets to the success of an Air Cadet Squadron is a well organized and effective Squadron Sponsoring Committee.

How can you provide help?

Parent/Guardian Volunteers: We are currently recruiting volunteer parents who are willing to commit their time during the cadet training year to support various squadron activities. Examples of volunteer opportunities include volunteering at fundraising events, driving cadets to locations, picking up supplies and donations, food services, and event coordination support.

SSC Executive Team: The SSC consists of board members who help the squadron with fundraising, event coordination, and acquiring donations from local businesses. The executive team consists of a board of members with positions such as chair, vice-chair, treasure and secretary.

All support that can be provided to the squadron is greatly appreciated. To become involved with our Squadron Sponsoring Committee, please contact the SSC by emailing: 172.chairperson@aircadetleague.on.ca.

To become a volunteer, you will be requested to undergo a comprehensive application process including a Police background check. Members of the SSC will support you through the process once you decide to join our team.

SSC Responsibilities

The Squadron Sponsoring Committee is responsible for:

• Providing financial and administrative support for the Squadron;
• Providing appropriate accommodation for the Squadron’s training, administration and stores;
• Providing training aids and equipment, including band instruments, not supplied by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF); and
• Providing transportation, when not available from the CAF for local training exercises.

Monthly SSC Meetings

Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Bowmanville High School. All parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate and attend the meeting. It is a great opportunity to find out about upcoming events as well as be apart of the process.
